Keith Hall is a London-bred contemporary abstract artist living and working in Shanghai, China.

Before dedicating himself fully to painting, Hall spent twelve years working in mental health. Being closely exposed to the complexity of human behaviour, emotion, and perception left a lasting influence on how he understands the world. Painting later became a way of exploring experiences that are difficult to explain directly: memory, tension, vulnerability, movement, and the shifting space between internal and external reality.

After studying Fine Art and Textiles at Goldsmiths, University of London, Hall developed an intuitive and physically engaged approach to abstraction. Rather than beginning with a predetermined composition, he allows each painting to emerge through a process of action, observation, and response.

Layers of acrylic, pigment, and occasional gold and silver leaf are built, disrupted, concealed, and revealed. Gesture and material guide the work, creating surfaces that change according to light, distance, and perspective. Moments of intensity are balanced by areas of stillness, allowing the paintings to feel both energetic and contemplative.

Although entirely abstract, Hall’s works often suggest imagined landscapes, architectural spaces, fragments of memory, or emotional states. These references remain deliberately unresolved, giving viewers space to bring their own experiences to the work.

Living between the cultural influences of London and Shanghai has further shaped his visual language. His paintings reflect the energy and constant transformation of urban life, while also searching for quieter moments of connection, balance, and reflection.

For Hall, painting is not the illustration of a fixed idea. It is a process of discovery: a way of making visible something that can be felt, but not always named.
